My Story
How I ended up here
At the end of 2024 I decided to close my alterations and upcycling business that I had been running for 10 years.

But my love for inspiring others to make more sustainable choices remained. Now it's time for the next chapter.
I had always loved fashion. I have been sewing since I was 10 and went on to study it at university. I remember watching a documentary about the Rana Plaza collapse at university which showed appalling working conditions for clothing manufacturers in Bangladesh. The building was unsafe and despite workers expressing their concerns they weren't listened to and the building collapsed killing and injuring thousands of people.

I remember going home that night and crying thinking to myself how on earth can I go into an industry that exploits people like this. So I decided to go out on my own, initially making custom made clothes for clients.

Then a couple years into my journey I watched another documentary called "War on Waste" by Craig Reucassel. An episode on focused on fast fashion and stated that on average Australians throw away 6000kgs of clothing every 10 minutes. Serendipitously I also discovered "Zero waste Daniel" who only makes clothing out of fabric scraps he finds at clothing manufacturers.
I was deeply moved by both and decided to try making my own pieces using what I had in my studio. This inspired my biggest business shift into only providing clothing alteration and upcycling services to encourage people to use the clothes they already have.

I loved educating people on all the ways they can make sustainable fashion choices, how it was good for the planet and also their pocket.
But I felt it was time for a change. After those 10 years I noticed I was getting a bit tired of sewing but my love for educating people around sustainable choices remained.

So Bethany Alice Creates was born. I now work with sustainably focused enterprises grow their presence online by inspiring others of the benefits of making more sustainable choices rather than being shamed into change.
I decided to solely focus on sustainability because as I continue my personal journey of making more sustainable choices, I don't want that journey to end when it comes to my work. I want to help others who are trying to help make the world a better place by telling their story.
At this point in my life I feel like I don't have it in me to work with businesses that aren't trying their best to have a positive impact on the environment and their community. For me it simply isn't enough for the only goal in business to make money for the sake of making money. I want to work with people who want to make money because they understand it's needed to implement sustainable business practices use environmentally friendly materials and pay employees a liveable wage that directly helps communities.
I don't want to work with businesses who are 'greenwashing' because they see sustainability as a trend. I want to work with people who believe in fundamentally changing the way we produce and consume in a way that honors the planet and our communities. This will look very different from business to business and person to person and while it still may not be perfect I know we are all doing the very best we can with the goal to improve.
I am also on my own journey to make more sustainable choices in all areas of my life rather than just my clothes.
I want to bring you along that journey as well to hopefully inspire you to make easy changes to your life that honour our planet.

Finally my long-term goal for this space will be a bridge between those two elements above. To showcase the incredible products/services of the businesses I support to the audience of people who are wanting to support sustainably focused businesses.
That way we can all do our part.

I believe enough small changes over time can have a really big impact on making the world a better place.
